A Wrist Slap for Dr. Death
Topics: Euthanasia advocacyDarwin-based voluntary euthanasia campaigner Philip Nitschke has been referred to the New Zealand Ministry of Health for allegedly holding euthanasia workshops without being registered. Nitschke, who authored the book Killing Me Softly, claims he was not practicing medicine and did not violate the law. Yes, he gave advice on manufacturing his "peaceful pill", a deadly barbiturate-based chemical cocktail. And yes, he laid out collaboration strategies that would make it hard for the police to prosecute. But no law was violated. (!?!)
He has a point - teaching to kill hardly falls within the realm of legitimate medical care . However, his how-to-kill-yourself-and-others workshop appears to violate New Zealand law against assisted suicide and is fundamentally reprehensible. Unfortunately, prosecution is unlikely.
