On NSA Program to Conduct Surveillance of Al Qaeda Contacts With Its Agents In America
Topics: War on TerrorPowerline's John Hinderaker has key excerpts from a speech by the NSA's former director, General Michael Hayden.
There are no communications more important to the safety of this country than those affiliated with al Qaeda with one end in the United States. The president's authorization allows us to track this kind of call more comprehensively and more efficiently. The trigger is quicker and a bit softer than it is for a FISA warrant, but the intrusion into privacy is also limited: only international calls and only those we have a reasonable basis to believe involve al Qaeda or one of its affiliates. As Hugh Hewitt puts it: "Democrats object to this. They want it to end, and all intercepts to be run - less comprehensively, less efficiently, with a slower and harder to pull trigger-- and (the rest of us) don't. That is the issue for the campaigns ahead in 2006."
If Al-Qaeda is making phone calls into the United States, our government needs to know why. Not knowing, could result in our death.
After all, we are either at war or we are not.
If we are, the president of the United States, whom the Constitution makes the commander-in-chief of our military forces, is empowered to conduct the war -- meaning he has unreviewable authority to employ all of the essential incidents of war fighting. And everyone but the moonbats knows that we are at war - especially the Islamofascist terrorists that wish to kill us and have us live under Islamic law.
So let the '06' games begin!
