Dems Personal Attacks Hurt Alito Family
Topics: Supreme Court
The attacks on Judge Samuel Alito by democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are outrageous, repetitive, and personal. It is not surprising that Alito's wife, Martha, left the confirmation hearing room in tears. What is remarkable is that the judge kept his steady even keel and answered with respect, common sense and honor while Kennedy and company inflicted their well practiced art of character assassination.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) apologized to the Judge's family, stating,
Judge Alito, I am sorry that you've had to go through this. I am sorry that your family has had to sit here and listen to this.He also soberly noted,
Let me tell you this: Guilt by association is going to drive good men and women away from wanting to sit where you're sitting. And we're going to go through a bit of this ourselves as congressmen and senators.Judge and Mrs. Alito, God bless you, we stand behind you!People are going to take a fact that we got a campaign donation from somebody who's found out to be a little different than we thought they were -- and our political opponent's going to say, "Aha, I got you!"

I understand some of the real concerns about ideology and agree with those concerns such as executive power (how much), personal privacy protections, Roe vs Wade, and whether he may be a danger to overturning it. I just wish they would stick to hitting the issues dead on and deal with them. Everything I have read about him indicates he is an excellent choice (except for these concerns) and his character seems to be solid.
I don't think it is appropriate or necessary to dig back into what he thought or did as a college student at Princeton - the world has changed a lot since then and so has he, as we all have. That is part of growing up and maturing. The US was more sexist and racist in the 70s and societal norms are very different today. Lindsay Graham was appropriate to stress the record for the past 15 years which is relevant.

"I just wish they would stick to hitting the issues dead on and deal with them." - is right on the mark. Alito's membership in CAP the only "dirt" that can be found so his opponents keep throwing it. The Vanguard issue is a similar example. Note also how so much of the 10 paragraph "questions" are aimed at the public rather than issued for the purpose of evaluating the nomination.
