Gunfire on jetway to American Air plane
Topics: News SummaryWhat kind of mental illness would lead a person to falsely claim he had a bomb in his carry-on luggage? Earlier today that is exactly what happened on the boarding bridge to Flight 924 in Miami. Federal air marshal's responded to the man's threat with bullets, killing him in their first ever use of fatal force near an aircraft.
CNN is tracking this developing story
Update - here is the answer to my question:
Passenger Mary Gardner told WTVJ in Miami that the man ran down the aisle from the rear of the plane. "He was frantic, his arms flailing in the air," she said. She said a woman followed, shouting, "My husband! My husband!"Gardner said she heard the woman say her husband was bipolar and had not had his medication.

Comments
The air marshals acted appropriately, regardless. There was no way they could have known otherwise, than the man actually having a bomb if he claimed he did, and then reached inside the bag. Had he actually had one, and the marshal not acted - everyone on the plane would be dead.
Moral here, if you need them, stay on your meds.
Howard Dean and Ted Kennedy should be paying attention to this - They've obviously been off theirs lately.
