Women resist honour marriages in Pakistan

Topics: Understanding Islam

A little known practice from the Western point of view in Pakistan is called vani where the daughters are given in marriage whilst they are under age. The practice was outlawed in Pakistan at the beginning of this year.

However, these girls were forced to undergo a marriage ceremony in 1996 as a way of putting an end to a family feud. The oldest girl is now 22 and the family of the husbands is demanding that the marriages are honoured.

The father of the girls has stated that he was forced to agree to the marriages by the elders of the village. He is supporting his daughters and other relatives who do not want to fulfill the marriage obligation.

This is yet another aspect of the backwardness of Islam that we in the west do not understand. If the father was not on the side of the girls then they could face being killed by other family members (called upsetting the honour of the family)

"This is yet another aspect of the backwardness of Islam that we in the west do not understand."

How was that concluded??

Anything practised by people living in Pakistan does not neccessarily mean that it is per Islamic laws. Pakistani culture in a lot of ways and practices has nothing to do with Islam at all. Most of these practices and attitude towards women comes from Ignorance age and are thousands of years old, whereas Islam did not prevail in the region 6-800 yrs back. The only thing is the people converted to Islam but never got to practise the liberality of Islam towards women society as a whole.
