Muslim leaders issue fatwah against riots (Updated)
Topics: Understanding IslamThe leaders of the largest mosque in Paris have issued a fatwah against the riot, although we agree with Lost Budgie who is not the least impressed, writing "French 'Anti-Riot' Fatwa: Weasel Words in Action."
This sounds very nice on the surface - but why must these "peaceful" fatwas always have some sort of wiggle room or escape clause? From CNN:
"It is formally forbidden to any Muslim seeking divine grace and satisfaction to participate in any action that blindly hits private or public property or could constitute an attack on someone's life," the fatwa said.Although the fatwah has likely been issued because the moderate leaders want to distance themselves from any links with the Muslim Brotherhood and those most likely to be responsible for egging on the rioters, Lost Budgie has a point. We have addressed that very issue previously, here, and here."Contributing to such exactions is an illicit act," declared the edict, which said it was applicable to "any Muslim living in France, whether a citizen or a guest of France."
