Militants Bomb Near Hospital As Saddam Lloyalists Move Toward Possible 'Last Stand'
Topics: Iraq[As usual, civilians and children bore the brunt of the bomb attack]
And the "last stand" part at this point needs to be said with a bit of "tongue in cheek."
At least 30 people were killed and 27 wounded when a car bomb exploded outside a hospital in a town south of Baghdad. The bomb was detonated as two Iraqi police cars drew up near the general hospital in Mahmudiya, about 20km (12 miles) outside Baghdad. Once again the wounded and dead were mostly civilian women and children. The town of Mahmydiya is another that has a mixed Sunni and Shia population. It seems that the insurgents who are responsible for the latest bombings are intent upon creating a civil war in order to take back control for Saddam Hussein.
Laith Kubba, spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari, told reporters that insurgent attacks are likely to increase in the run-up to December's parliamentary elections. The Shia and Sunni Moslems of these villages south of Baghdad have already suffered high casualties during bombings earlier in the year when a bomb exploded in a marketplace and killed over 125 people. More of this is likely to occur as we draw closer to the elections, and as the Iraqi Prime Minister suggests, the Muslim extremists and Saddam loyalists attempt to stop them. Whether or not we can call it a "last stand" remains to be determined. He predicted that Muslim extremists and militants loyal to Saddam Hussein would make their last stand.
"Muslim extremists will be surrounded then wiped out," Mr Kubba said, although he conceded that it would not happen quickly.
