Louisiana cash going to the dogs, cows and goats

On September 28, Cindy Applebaum wrote in the WAPO that two hurricanes have now hit Louisiana, wreaking terrible destruction. She added that New Orleans continues to flood, hundreds of thousands of people are scattered across the country, many in shelters, and given the scale of the calamity, surely it's time for Louisiana politicians to stop, assess the damage and work out the most rational way to help their state recover.

She then went on to say that surely, this is not the time for the government to write blank checks, for legislators to get greedy about unnecessary canals in their districts, or for federal agencies to launch projects that make future flooding more likely. Surely this is the time to spend money wisely. Right?

But then she answered her own question with - WRONG. And as it turns out, she was - RIGHT!

Louisiana will spend $45 million on sports and livestock facilities and other new projects in spite of a looming deficit, frustrating some officials who say the frivolity reinforces the state's history of political patronage. "We're in Washington with our hands out asking for $2 billion plus, and rather than holding on to the money to see what the needs are, they're spending it on local projects financing goat shows and lawn-mower races," says state Sen. Robert Barham, Oak Ridge Republican.
