Interior Minister talks tough as Lyons burns

Topics: War on Terror - the issues.

The French Interior Minister has not backed down from his tough talk over the rioting that swept throughout France and continues in Lyons on day 17 of the worst riots this century.

"All those who wish to commit acts of violence will be brought to justice," Sarkozy said.

He has been criticized by the rioters and by politicians for his tough language and he was heckled when he inspected security forces on Saturday evening on Paris' elegant Champs Elysees avenue, seen as a possible flashpoint.

But in a poll published in Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper, 53 percent of those surveyed said they were confident Sarkozy could resolve the problems in impoverished suburbs.

What is promised is that those who are charged with rioting face the possibility of being deported back to their country of origin. Considering the damage that they have caused, I believe that this is a just solution.

At the same time more work needs to be done to bring about a permanent peace and that includes seeking a way of removing barriers to employment for an immigrant population that has ways that are strange to the European mindset. It is also time that these Muslim youth, and their handlers, began to realise that they have to make some compromises, act like citizens if want to be treated like citizens - and not terrorists, and show a bit of mature behaviour.
