Intensive care nurse could face homicide charges
Topics: Euthanasia advocacyA nurse from an intensive care unit in a Geelong Victoria hospital has been interviewed by homicide detectives regarding the death of a patient after it was discovered that equipment that was keeping the patient alive had been tampered.
The patient had organ failure and was perhaps 30 minutes from death when the incident occurred. However, the tampering with the equipment even when the patient is dying could mean that the nurse will face homicide charges.
This is a very strange case with regard to euthanasia. If the nurse is charged with homicide I have no doubt that the euthanasia advocates will be all over the case and will provide high profile assistance to fight the charges that could be laid.
If the case goes ahead and the prosecution loses its case then the prospect would be that the way is open for intensive care staff to tamper with equipment to the point that the death of the patient is in fact hastened. This could have some rather unexpected consequences.
