France uses emergency laws to bring calm to Paris

Topics: War on Terror - the issues.

With the introduction of emergency legislation, Paris has been able to begin the task of restoring order to the city after riots that have continued for the past 15 days. The first step in restoring order is the banning of rallies that are likely to incite violence.

The government has declared a state of emergency, and this has allowed Paris and surrounding areas the power to establish curfews so that the rioting Muslim youths could end up being arrested if they break curfew.

Despite the widespread damage to property, the death of one man and the wounding of police officers, there has been a big effort by the French government to study the underlying reasons for the unrest and then do something about ending the discrimination.

There are legitimate reasons for the people who are stuck in ghettoes and who suffer high levels of discrimination and unemployment, to be frustrated and angry. However, that does not excuse the rioting and damage of property. Moreover, those responsible for the death of 61 year old man who was bashed by assailants outside his home, should be prosecuted for murder.

One of the scariest aspects of these riots has been the way in which the radicals worked to stir up trouble, and the passions of the people. Let's hope that most of them have now been rounded up, and that if they are found guilty of inciting the riots, that they are kicked out of France on a permanent basis.
