25 year-old Afghan women dies from battering

Topics: Understanding Islam

A young Afghan woman poet has died as the result of a battering. Her husband has confessed to hitting her during a row.

If this story occurred in the west the husband would be on charges for murder, but in countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and the other Middle Eastern countries where Sharia rules, this death is unremarkable. After all, men are allowed to beat their wives, and they are allowed to bash women if they show an inch of flesh. It is an illustration of the violence that happens everywhere around the world (this kind of violence is not limited to husbands bashing wives, but can also be wives bashing or killing their husbands).

My question is: if the husband has confessed to bashing this young woman (does this sound like a scene in Florida?) and the family has refused an autopsy, then will the husband be charged with her murder? If it was not for the fact that this young woman had published a book of poetry I wonder if her death would have even been mentioned by any journalist. How many other women in Afghanistan and the Middle East die in similar circumstances?
