Teacher and Muslim school clash over headscarf

A 32-year-old Amsterdam Muslim is challenging the decision by an Islamic school not to employ her because she refuses to wear a headscarf, and claims that it was wrong to demand she cover her head in order to work there. The case comes a week after Education Minister Maria van der Hoeven said she is in favour of a ban on wearing the all-covering burka (bedsheet with a peep hole) in schools.Good for her! If she chose to wear a scarf, also good for her, but she didn't. Islam has a real problem with women's rights, .

I am not a follower of women's liberation. However, I believe that the women who are Muslims need to come to realise that by being forced to wear the headscarf etc. they are in fact being enslaved.
What we wear has nothing at all to do with religion and our relationship with God. This Muslim woman is right. The school has no right to refuse to employ her on the grounds that she will not wear a headscarf. The mere fact that they are making this demand is an indication of the type of school that has been set up.
Whilst I do think that there is a good reason to criticise women who dress in an almost obscene way (showing their bottom, and other parts of the anatomy that should be covered), I do not believe that covering one's head with a scarf is modesty. Neither do I believe that the covering of one's ankles, wrists and face is at all necessary (says me who is wearing an ankle length skirt because I think that it is more flattering to my particular figure).
I think that the message that we need to get out to Muslim women is that the men are using these draconian laws as a form of enslavement, and that they can be free of this form of slavery, if they desire to be free. I recognize that many Muslim women are afraid of becoming free from this form of slavery, since they have willingly embraced this form of dress. Perhaps one day they will finally realise that they are getting a rough deal.
