More Islamic Persecution Of Non-Muslims: Jakarta turns blind eye to holy wars

Topics: Understanding Islam

Indonesia is the world's largest Islamic country in terms of the number of adherents, and the number of Islamic extremists is growing.

And in what borders on a case of an Islamic government sanctioning the persecution of Christians, whether it's the recent suicide bombings in Bali, or the forcible closing of churches in West Java and the persecution of so-called heretical and liberal Muslims, the march of militant Islam is leading to increased intolerance of non-Muslims across Indonesia.

As many as 23 so-called "wild" or unlicensed Christian churches in West Java have been forced to close by militant Muslims in recent months, according to prominent Christians, who fear they are facing a surge of bigotry.

Muslims considered insufficiently orthodox have also been under threat. Hundreds of militants recently attacked mosques, as many as 33 houses and a number of cars in Cianjur, West Java, because the property belonged to the "heretical" Islamic Ahmadiyah sect. Ominously, the militants say their actions are condoned by both the state and by peak Islamic bodies.
Front Page Magazine did a piece on the widespread persecution of Christians, and pointed out that such persecution is an increasing phenomenon in the Islamic world.
Aside from its obvious tragic and horrifying ingredients, what is the significance and meaning of this persecution? Why is it almost never mentioned in the Western media? How is it connected to the conflict between the West and militant Islam? Why should America be concerned?
And the most disturbing thing about the article, is that it was written on October 10, 2003!!!

If it was already that bad in late 2003, just imagine how bad it really is today, two full years later.

So why isn't covered more in the Western media?
