Mixed Reactions for Miers

Topics: Supreme Court

miers.jpgChris Cillizza did an interesting survey of U.S. Senators that are up for re-election in 2006. He polled 10 Senators - five Democrats, five Republicans - to determine their reaction to the Harriet Miers Supreme Court Nomination.

Unlike the Roberts' nomination, he found some of the Republicans hesitant, even cautious. And, one of the three Democrats that responded was positive.

In fact, his informal study is consistent with reports of conservatives in general who remain divided on this issue.

On the otherhand, the Washington Times reports

The stealth candidate received praise from Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, who had recommended that Mr. Bush consider Miss Miers. "I like Harriet Miers," Mr. Reid said. "The Supreme Court would benefit from the addition of a justice who has real experience as a practicing lawyer."
I've looked upon the nomination with disappointment, believing that a Republican "conservative" President with a Republican backed Senate should unashamedly select a judicial candidate that forthrightly and publicly holds strictly to the constitution, including the sanctity of all human life. With the tremendously high stakes involved why not wage the battle of a lifetime to get a true conservative on the court?

Conservatives have waited a long time for the momement and, as Captain Ed puts it, "What did we get? Another long-term Bush buddy getting a lifetime job on the basis of proximity instead of excellence."

Yes, Bush blew it... however, Miers needs to be given a chance and "may still surprise us, so let's not compound the mistake."

Update: Harry Reid is so very happy with Miers' nomination
