Genetically Another Woman's Children
Topics: Life Issues
Advancements in reproductive technologies have led to a number of unique controversies involving parental rights, especially in cases where the birth mother is genetically unrelated to her child.
Recently, a Nashville court ruled that the birth mother of triplets, conceived with another woman's eggs, is the children's' "legal" mother even though she is genetically unrelated to them.
The genetic father of the kids, who wanted guardianship after the couple broke up, had challenged the woman's parental rights.
Some legal scholars claim that the decision could apply a broad definition of a parent and be exploited by "nontraditional" (e.g., homosexual) parents. This certainly would be an unfortunate and an unnecessary outcome.
The question we pose to our readers is:
Did the court rule properly by giving greater rights to the mother even though she was genetically unrelated to her children?
