Father Denies Oklahoma Suicide Bomber May be Jihadi
Topics: Understanding IslamIn our post yesterday entitled, "Oklahoma Bombing: Suicide or Attempted Suicide Bombing Gone Awry?" we posited the question: "Which is it - an "out of touch" (with reality) student is depressed and happens to make a bomb out of materials very similar to that of Islamic terrorists and may or may not have had Islamic materials in his apartment, and commits suicide; or, alternatively, a suicide bombing attempt is made by another sick minded individual that for whatever reason, subscibes to the Islamic ideal of jihad - and blows himself up prematurely, accidentally?" Now, a WorldNetDaily (via Jawa Report) report seems to be taking us in the direction of a possible jihadi-related scenario.
Doug Hagmann, a seasoned investigator, told WND he was informed by multiple reliable law-enforcement sources familiar with the investigation into the incident that authorities recovered a "significant amount" of "jihad" materials, as well as Hinrichs' computer.Hagmann also said those same sources indicated police and federal agents "had pulled additional explosives from [Hinrichs'] house," including triacetone triperoxide, or TATP, "homemade explosive [that is] very potent but relatively easily manufactured."
TATP is the explosive used in the London transit bombings, and is a high explosive that can be made from common household items such as drain cleaner(sulfuric acid - H2SO4), hydrogen peroxide(H2O2), and acetone(CH3COCH3), a common organic solvent. It is actually a mixture of stereoisomers, and in its finished form - it is almost undetectable by sniffer dogs or conventional bomb detection systems..
The confiscated jihad documents "referenced bomb-making manuals and that type of thing," Hagmann said, who added Hinrichs' apartment in Norman, Okla., is "located near the Islamic Society [of Norman]."In the way of a disclaimer, Jawa Report offers:
Larry Hagmann is the director of the Northeast Intelligence Network, so both stories are based on the same uncorraborated reports. NEIN has been called 'the world's most alarmist website' by a number of people in the past, so we'll let that stand as a disclaimer. It will be very interesting to follow this story and see what really motivated Hinrichs to kill himslelf in this fashion.Wizbang brings up the point that "The young man's father had an odd quote in this article":However, if the WND/NEIN reports are true about jihadi material, but Hinrichs was not motivated by jihad, then think about what this is saying. If you want to blow yourself up, then who better to consult than the local chapter of the Islamic Society of North America? That's a pretty sad statement.
"He was pretty disengaged from politics," the father said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "And he took the care to select an open area where there was no one around."On the otherhand, a Wizbang reader writes that:Unless you count the 82,000 football fans 100 yards away...
...despite being close to the stadium, it actually is pretty isolated. We don't know yet what his proximity to the stadium meant, if anything. The comments from people who knew this guy indicate he didn't appear to hold any Islamic beliefs or political convictions to speak of -- he was a frat boy who battled clinical depression and had an obsessive interest in "artillery," as one classmate put it. A jihadi? No way.So the "net" indications are pretty much a wash and we'll have to wait for more "investigation leaks" to match up with more facts before we really learn whether or not Joel Henry Hinrichs III was a jihadi or a crazy mixed up kid! But however it turns out, it does seem a little ironic that he blew himself up near buses and a stadium full of people, and lived close to an Islamic center.
