Editor arrested in Afghanistan

Topics: Dhimmitude

The editor of a women's magazine has been arrested in Afghanistan for printing what has been called "blasphemous articles." One would think that he had written something bad about God (Allah). Instead the man who has been arrested has questioned the continuing abuse of women in Afghanistan. It is for this reason that he has been arrested.

I am reminded of the Sanhedrin from the time of Christ, and for that matter of the officials of the Roman Empire. One could get arrested and crucified for refusing to worship a figure such as Nero. In the case of the Sanhedrin one could get arrested for claiming that Jesus is the Messiah. The early Christians were arrested, thrown into jail and beaten. Some were killed for alleged blasphemy. The most notable case is that of St. Stephan who spoke out against the behaviour of the Sanhedrin. Then again there is the case of St. John the Baptist. He was arrested because he spoke out against Herod's relationship with his brother, Philip's wife. In fact John the Baptist incited so much hatred in Herodias that she demanded that his head be delivered to her on a silver platter.

Even though the Taliban has fallen, the rights of the women of Afghanistan have not improved all that much over the years. Under Taliban rule they were forced to wear the burqa, and they were not permitted to have professional jobs. At one point the women of Afghanistan had the best medical facilities in the Middle East. That was before women were banned from being doctors under the rule of the Taliban and the hospitals were allowed to fall into disrepair. When the Taliban fell we began to hear stories about women being chased and beaten in the streets if they even showed a little bit of ankle (as if a bit of ankle was going to start up someone's sexual appetite!!!).

It would seem that the editor who has been arrested thought that not enough was being done to liberate the women of Afghanistan from the harshness of the rule of the Taliban. He dared to question the repressive Islamic laws that have been applied against the Afghani women. Someone complained and he has been arrested for daring to question these repressive laws.

This seems to be a case of Islamic Dhimmitude. It means that people are too frightened to speak out against injustice to their own kind for fear of being arrested. I hope that this man does not back down from what he has written.
