Why U.S. generals think Iraqis will do a better job of suppressing insurgents

Topics: Iraq

Posted on a bulletin board at Centcom headquarters here in Doha, Qatar, is a 1918 admonition from T.E. Lawrence explaining what he learned in training Arab soldiers: "It is better to let them do it themselves imperfectly than to do it yourself perfectly. It is their country, their way, and our time is short."

What do General Abizaid and his commanders fear the most?

It's that eroding political support for the war in the U.S. will undermine their strategy for a gradual transition to Iraqi control, a strategy that they believe is beginning to pay off. And since it will require several more years of hard work to stabilize the country, the generals devoutly want the American people to stay the course - a course they describe as being more limited, and more realistic, than recent political debate might suggest.

As to the erotion of political support at home, I think we're safe in that regard, so long as we have Cindy helping to put the anti-war movement into it's proper perspective.
