Pentagon: Top Zarqawi Aide Killed
Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives
CBS/AP is reporting that according to Pentagon officials, Abu Azzam - the No. 2 al Qaeda leader in Iraq and the deputy to Abu Musab al Zarqawi, was killed Sunday night during a house raid in Baghdad. "As the aide to Zarqawi, Abu Azzam (Al-Iraqi)was reportedly in control of financing foreign fighters coming into Iraq." FoxNews reports that he was killed by U.S. Special Forces.
The Abu Azzam killed in Sunday's raid, is a different "Abu Azzam" mentioned as captured on March 19, 05 who was responsible for conducting VBIED operations as well as coordinating logistics between the various cells in Mosul operating under Abu Talha. Talha was reported to always wear a suicide vest and swore to kill himself before would be captured. He turned out to be all talk and no action, and gave up without a fight when cornered.
There's an Abu Azzam (the American?) at about 8 oclock in this May 05 Al-Zarqawi network organizational chart. So we have to be careful as to "who" we place in the "who's who" list of Zarqawi accomplices, now rapidly thinning out.
