Gangs Blocking Relief Efforts In New Orleans
Topics: Natural DisastersRep. Peter King told WABC Radio's John Gambling today that "Armed gangs of roaming thugs are the primary reason relief efforts in flood-ravaged New Orleans have been delayed, saying that "The main problem in obstructing the relief operation - it's almost like a Mogadishu-like gang situation that's prevailing in New Orleans." According to king, the situation would have gone a lot better if there were a Rudy Giuliani down there - someone who could have set a firm tone from day one." Outside the Superdome, where 20,000 survivors have sought refuge, a National Guardsman has been shot.
A New Orleans hospital stopped its evacuation of patients after it came under fire from gunmen - as Mayor Ray Nagin issued "a desperate SOS" for help in dealing with an increasingly dangerous situation. A physician said he and his National Guard escorts were returning to Charity Hospital at around 11:30 a.m. after dropping off patients at nearby Tulane Medical Center when a sniper began shooting at their convoy of Humvees. About an hour later, the same physician was loading patients for transport when another gunman opened fire at the hospital.
Isn't it time to send in the Marines?
