NARAL Pulls False Attack Ad
Topics: Pro-LifeThe National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) has pulled its nationwide television advertisement attacking Judge John Roberts after being overrun by criticism from both pro-life groups and abortion supporters. [HT: LifeNews]
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman and abortion advocate Arlen Specter called NARAL's 30-second ad "blatantly untrue and unfair" for suggesting that Judge Roberts supported "violent fringe groups and a convicted clinic bomber" in a case nearly 15 years ago.
Despite the backlash, even from their supporters, NARAL remains unapologetic. "We regret that many people have misconstrued our recent advertisement about Mr. Roberts' record," Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, wrote in a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter.
Columnist Jacob Sullum, in a TownHall editorial, comments,
In addition to his ambiguous record as a lawyer and judge, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts has the benefit of opponents who seem determined to discredit themselves and guarantee his confirmation. This self-destructive impulse is epitomized by NARAL Pro-Choice America's despicable TV ad linking Roberts to "violent fringe groups."
CK Rairden, writing for the National Ledger, seems to agree with Sullum:
NARAL did the American voter a huge favor. This ad allows the White house and Roberts' supporters to now correctly point to the lengths that the moonbats on the left will travel to destroy those who wish to rule on law, instead of partaking in judicial activism. No one, except NARAL (and CNN), appears to be taking the ad seriously.
Unfortunately, CNN did air the ad causing Fidelis, a national Catholic-based advocacy group, to note that while the network agreed to accept the NARAL attack ad on Judge John Roberts, it refused to air a pro-life ad featuring international humanitarian Mother Teresa. In 1998, CNN rejected an ad produced by Right to Life of Michigan featuring a touching interview with Mother Teresa filmed just before her death. At the time, the cable network cited its policy prohibiting "issue advertisements".
Perhaps CNN has changed its policy because the the Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) contacted CNN on Thursday regarding the NARAL ad and was given the following statement: "CNN accepts advocacy advertising from responsible groups from across the political spectrum who wish to express their views and their opinions about issues of public importance."
To summarize, CNN rejected a pro-life advertisement involving Mother Teresa because it was "issue" oriented. CNN, founded by NARAL supporter Ted Turner, runs an obviously false issue-oriented ad placed by NARAL because their policy is to allow expression of views and opinions about "issues".
