Hawaii Is Clamoring For Trouble With The Akaka Bill
Topics: Political News and commentariesKathryn Lopez, in her TimesUnion.com article today, quotes Martin Luther King Jr. concerning his dream for children of America: "... one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Lopez hints that one day we may need a passport to bath on the beaches of Maui, and continues with:
(...) The bill, proponents say, would allow Native Hawaiians to 'exercise their right to self-determination by selecting another form of government, including free association or total independence.'"The unconstitutionality of the Akaka Bill is articulated well throughout the article.
(...) equiality under the law would be subverted by the enactment of the Akaka Bill. Some two hundred-plus years of equality would be flushed down the drain. Further requests for racial separateness would follow. Balkanization of America would ensue. Passing of the Akaka Bill would set racial mandates of the likes that produced slavery.
The author closes with a question about the meaning of "Aloha" being used by the Republican Governor of the state of Hawaii. "Even if you are continental-U.S.-bound with no hope or desire to sit on the sun-drenched sands of Waikiki, you should care about this bill."
