C'mon Pat, You Can Do Better Than That!

Topics: National News

Yesterday we heard evangelist Pat Robertson suggest that the U.S. assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to stop the Latin American country becoming a "launching pad" for extremism.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come to exercise that ability," Robertson said. "This is a dangerous enemy to our south controlling a huge pool of oil... We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Today he insisted that he had been been "misinterpreted" by The Associated Press and that he had never used the word "assassination."

"I said our special forces should 'take him out.' 'Take him out' could be a number of things, including kidnapping," he explained.

Huh?. Not even Robertson's friends buy that explanation especially those who heard him say, "If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war, and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Perhaps that's why Pat later apologized for calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

"Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement. I spoke in frustration that we should accommodate the man who thinks the U.S. is out to kill him."

As one is does agree with Robertson on a number of important issues I'm amazed at his blatant irresponsibility on this one ...
