Sweetener 'linked' to leukaemiasTopics: Health Issues
Fresh doubts about the safety of an artificial sweetener have been raised by Italian scientists who have linked its use to leukaemias in rodents. Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar and is used throughout the world in low-calorie drinks and foods. Regulators say existing studies show it is safe, but will look at the European Journal of Clinical Oncology study. But they said it was unlikely that the sweetener was harmful to humans to the same extent as in rats.
Regulators say it's safe, but there's much more to learn about Aspartame....

Well I do not agree with the people who say that Aspartame is safe. There is something in aspartame that upsets my stomach. I always get the name of the particular ingredient wrong. When I have a product with aspartame in it I end up with a bowel problem that is not very nice.
It is highly probable that aspartame can be linked positively to leukemia, and probably other forms of cancer. I have a feeling that the particular enzyme that is included in aspartame is at fault, and that this same enzyme causes a blood condition in new born infants - that is why they are tested for PKH (I probably do not have that right either). From memory, this is the same ingredient that can also be found in licorice.
It is the high levels of the product that is the problem. When one has everything with artificial sweetener then there are dangers to one's health that needs to be considered.
Yes, I think that aspartame should be banned because it can be quite harmful.

This is bad news that's been floating around for some time now. I've mostly ignored it since I'm trying to lose weight. If I don't drink diet soda, I end up drinking regular which is (I thought) even worse.
Turns out I might have been wrong. A study (I put the url below)suggests that diet soda may make you even fatter than regular. So now I get cancer and I'm fat. I can't win.

the answer here is simply not to have the soft drink but to find alternatives such as water, as often as possible. It is not having the soft drink that is harmful but the quantity that is harmful. Therefore if you had one soft drink in a week then that is not harmful to your body. I believe that it is better to have the product with the refined sugar, rather than the product with the aspartame.
I did some research into aspartame last year. There is an ingredient called phenylanamine (sp) that is an enzyme of some sort. It is in aspartame. It is the ingredient that upsets my stomach when I have too much of anything that contains aspartame. This must give cause for concern. If it was so harmless why does it cause me to have lose bowels? The obvious answer for me is to avoid the diet product that contains aspartame.
I am not sure whether some of the other products have the same problem as aspartame. I think from memory of the research that I did last year. aspartame has been under a cloud for a long time because it has been fingered in such things as birth defects etc. etc. As usual there might have been a cover up over its defects but I cannot judge on whether or not this is true.
