Researchers create working brain cells
Topics: MedicineSWEDISH researchers have created new functioning brain cells from stem cells drawn from the brains of living adults, sparking hope that effective treatments for devastating illnesses like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's could be at hand. According to a researcher at the Stockholm Karolinska Institute, neurosurgeons withdrew the stem cells from the brains of adults during routine surgery for hydrocephalus, or water on the brain; one of the researchers stated that, "The mere potential of these cells has had a significant impact of how we today evaluate the regenerative capacity of the central nervous system and, importantly, on the possible means for science to provide insights in neural repair."
