Rehnquist To Retire TODAY -- Or (Updated -Done Deal?)

Topics: Political News and commentaries

Erick at RedState.org writes that Robert Novak is reporting William Rehnquist to retire at 4:50pm today when the President lands in Washington. However, on the same site in a 15:32:54 update, also by Erick, we have SCOTUSBlog saying that Novak is wrong and there will be no retirement.

Yet, Drudge reports that reporter Bob Novak declares on CNN that Rehnquist will announce retirement today after Bush's plane touches down at Andrews AFB approx. 4:50 PM EDT... DEVELOPING...

Yes, no, maybe? More to come, maybe.

Backcountry Conservative says ditto.

Update - Powerline has the buzz in Washington to be that Chief Justice Rehnquist will resign today at 4:55 p.m. eastern time. Well, again maybe. Eugene Volokh also seems to be reporting this with an air of "take it for what it's worth." The blogosphere seems to be waiting with bated breath.

InTheBullPen also seems to be following the story.

On the matter of who should be chosen as Chief Justice of SCOTUS, Michelle Malkin writes "there is one fundamental issue that matters more than any other in choosing the next Supreme Court justice--a wartime Supreme Court justice. More than abortion. More than affirmative action. More than the Ten Commandments in courtrooms. The issue is national security."

To which I say yes, but ...

And to whether or not Rehnquist will retire or not - I go with the yes.

Update [2005-7-8 17:20:42 by Erick at RedState.org]:

William Rehnquist, Chief Justice of the United States, has retired. A White House statement is forthcoming. Should caveat this: A very good source says this.

Update: Mark in Mexico also writes that Justice Rehnquist has retired.
