A series of explosions has ripped across central London, killing at least 37 people and injuring many hundreds more.

In what appears to have been a co-ordinated terrorist attack, there were blasts on three Underground trains and a bus, as the morning rush hour drew to a close.

The capital's public transport system was halted and a high-level emergency procedure swung into action. All hospitals were full by mid-morning.

The first explosion happened on an Underground train just outside the busy Liverpool Street station.

Further blasts hit a train heading from Russell Square station to King's Cross and another at Edgware Road station.

The final explosion was on a double-decker bus.

From The Scotsman we have:

The evil of al-Qaeda - TERRORISTS struck at the heart of London yesterday, detonating a series of bombs in a long-threatened attack that killed dozens of people and injured hundreds more.

'When I got off the train I saw two bodies lying on the track beside it' - VICTIMS of the London bomb attacks tell of their horror as a bus is blown up and Tube blasts force passengers to walk past the dead and injured to escape the crippled trains.

The world stands shoulder to shoulder with British people - TONY Blair delivered a robust defence of the values of the free world yesterday as he insisted the G8 summit will not be disrupted by terrorism or deflected from its decisions over African poverty, debt and trade.

From BBC News:
Massive hunt for London bombers - A massive investigation is under way to find out who was responsible for four bombs which killed 37 people.

Muslim leaders join condemnation - Muslim leaders have condemned the terror attacks on London and called for full co-operation with police. (Related writings of the Muslim Council of Britain- HERE).

Witnesses tell of bomb blast hell - Eyewitnesses tell what they saw and heard at blast sites around the capital.

- From the Jerusalem Post:

Analysis: Israeli experts say UK didn't dig deep enough in uprooting Islamists.
former senior IDF intelligence officer said the attack was probably linked with al-Qaida and should serve as a catalyst for setting up a global counter-terrorism headquarters. The terror attacks were also likely greatly helped by sleeper cells inside Britain ...

Arab world shocked at London attacks - Some in the Arab world expressed shock at the bombings in a city for which many felt great affection and which is home to numerous Arab exile groups, newspapers and businesses.

- From Haaretz.com:

Analysis: Doubts abound as to identity of London bombers - So who is responsible for Thursday's London terrorist offensive? One scenario points to an Al-Qaida terror cell which received instructions from Osama bin Laden himself or from his senior deputies. Another possibility suggests that the attacks were carried out by an independent terrorist group which draws inspiration from Al-Qaida and bin Laden.

Israeli Embassy strongly denies report it received early warning of attacks - A spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in London strongly denied Associated Press reports indicating British intelligence services informed embassy security officers of terrorists' intentions attack an Israeli target. According to the same AP report, the British alerted the Israeli Embassy just minutes before the series of terror attacks in London.

- From the Washington Post via Drudge:

U.K. Officials Face Big Task in Bombings - British investigators face the daunting task of scrutinizing hours of closed circuit television footage, sifting through tons of wreckage and analyzing tiny traces of explosives to find those responsible for Thursday's deadly explosions in London. Time may not be on their side.

"There is real passion now in the police to make arrests quickly before further attacks can be carried out," said Charles Shoebridge, a security analyst and former counterterrorism intelligence officer.

"While (the bombers) are at large now, a second attack is very likely, because there's no reason for them not to, they've broken their cover," he said. "They will now try to exploit whatever freedom they have left" to kill again, because it is likely they will eventually be caught, Shoebridge said.

- From the News Telegraph:

'We were like sardines in there, just waiting to die' - The Piccadilly Line train was only minutes out of King's Cross when, without warning, a blast tore through one of the carriages.

- From The Guardian Unlimited:
Experts to trace footprint of blasts - The explosions left at least four scenes across the capital which forensic experts will pick through to try to piece together what happened. Much of the expertise will come from scientists at 109 Lambeth Road, the London office of the government's Forensic Science Service. It employs scientists with expertise ranging from explosives residues to bomb-blast patterns.

- From CNN:

Investigators pick through London carnage - U.S. law enforcement sources said investigators have discovered remnants of timing devices that may have been used in the train explosions -- but that no such fragments have been found at the site of the bus blast. Investigators' first priority is to examine forensic evidence and video footage from the transport system's extensive surveillance system, Paddick said. (no timing device at bus site - possible suicide bomber?)

- From AlJazeera:
Muslim scholars move to curb fatwas - The Muslim world's top scholars have agreed that fatwas, or religious edicts, should only be issued by clerics with religious authority. The move is meant to weaken statements by figures involved in fighting in Iraq who ordain violence.
