Email From Iraqi Friend In Babylon II - with numerous updates(latest update 7PM EDT)

Topics: Terrorism

The carnage continues to be unveiled....

Update - Sabah continues to send more information as the AP reports that "The government raised the death toll from Saturday's attack in the town south of the Iraqi capital to "more than 90" making it the second deadliest single terrorist bombing since the overthrow of Sadaam Hussain More than 150 people were wounded."

This is a continuing update to my previous post written late last night. Sabah has returned to the scene of the terrible suicide bombing that almost killed him and his sons, and that the AP reported on earlier; he has now sent more information and images.

Here is the first of several emails we received from Sabah this morning (building on the previous post):

Dear Richard , I' ve already returned from the blast site of Al-Mussyib district town. The fact behind is that the suicider was driving a gas tanker (shown in the picture attached) , this type for gas to supply for LPG cylinders- gas used in kitchen-. Usually such trucks are not allowed to pass its way across the old bridge of the city. Some witnesses declared they could see when the local policeman intercepted him but the driver justified that he should take the round turn to go back his old way. Thus the blast happened by exploding himself at only 5 meters from the gate of the Shitte mosque( as shown in the picture). This is to show that there is no gas station near to the site but only local public market.

Try to check the attached 20 pictures talking about this horrible massacre! Followed some of the citizens's point of views.

Note: Local reports say that the number killed reached to 80 persons. Injured more than 90. Most of them suffer 1st degree burns. Doctors expected 50% may die out of bad burnt cases.

Suggested title for Yahoo Newa should should have read: A suicide blast killed 80 persons , injured more than 90 at Shiite Mosque

Another email:

Dear Richard, Find further 2 pictures. I am sending pictures in pairs owing to the poor server we have now.

By the way, roads were closed to the blast site. For coming cars only. So, passerbyes should get down to continue their way to the city on foot!

Please, keep in touch.
regards
Sabah Jasim

We all need to be reminded, myself included, that there are peaceful Muslims around the world, especially in Iraq, and that they too are suffering at the hands of militant Islamists. Some Muslims are begining to try to take back their faith from the militant Islamic thugs that commit the horrors becoming so common to the screens of our television sets. They do not support terrorism and wish to live in peace. Sabah and his friends are among them. They need our support.

New update from Sabah:

Another Update - VERY INFORMATIVE WITH INSIGHT: New email from Sabah:

Dear Richard,
The victims chose moslems of both Shiite and Sunni. The mosque at the blast site belongs to what is known here as Muqtada Al-Sadder's trend. Locally call themselves( Al-Sadrieen) those Moslem people who assist Muqtada- the young clergyman who made it controversial with other Moslem trends.

By the way, some citizens have their own coments: - they say such blast and the like are planned by the USA. It is only the extremists who suddenly found themselves helpless and losing their old interest , so they have been doing their best to frustrate the current government. Sure the government has its some mistakes by their narrow eyesighting things around especially other trends rather than policic Islam- that is why they face such obstacles on the account of poor Iraqi citizins who are merely a free project for the disputers !

But I say that Islam clergymen should get off their turbans and come to discuss the current conditions together without any religious narrow eyesight.

Still, l will make an interview with a close hurt family by their 2 sons at one time!

B. regards,
Sabah Jasim -  IRAQ

7 PM (EDT) Update:

Dear Richard,

Well, I met some Sunnis to discuss this terrorist act. One of them is a food stuff shop owner who seemingly was very excited of the superficial reaction of one of his Shiite neighbours. The Shiite neighbour's elder son was holding his revolver and threatening that such a Sunni tribe whose some of its followers were arrested under terrorisim accusation - he believed - should be killed.

The Sunni man was very nervous claiming how such rural people could ever realize the real facts behind these bombings. He continued:
"That is a big conspiracy from neighboring countries like Syria and Iran with some migrants from Saudi Arabia. such terrorits are united , aware or unaware, by one target. They have been driven by some political threads to keep our country in a mess and in disorder so that they could - as they believed- to add some more days to their regime and to revenge themselves upon the new era of democracy.

Notwithstanding all these attempts - some other friends - believe that Islam is to suffer some internal revolution and it should filter its accumilated experiences for better understanding and by depending on Islam fundamental uprising not by threatening people to accept Islam by force but rather by respecting the other and by showing high conduct and excellent moral.

To me I believe that all this is but a beginning of a reaction of all religions signalling 'no use to go with the modern scientific inventions and advanced cosmic world' and 'there must be a new answer to end the hard question of poverty after all this long epoch ever since religon had begun to keep people living altogether peacefully'.

Hence there should be a new queuing. This can be achieved mainly by high advanced education and new knowledge technology. Otherwise, we should have better dreams of change to be realized by imagination or through creativity. This needs some sacrifice since in Koran there is a saying uncovers a fact: "Are those people who are aware be put equally all along with those who are ignorent?" Once we realize this fact then all would go well.

Till tomorrow, have a nice day.
Best wishes
Sabah

The original post, for convinience, is re-posted below:

[Update just now received (23:35 EDT) from Sabah in extended post - Yahoo News AP report was wrong...]

(original post)
We have been in communication with an Iraqi in southern Iraq for some time now, and this evening, he sent us a disturbing email. The great majority of people in Iraq want democracy to succeed, and are suffering terribly from the relentless terrorism taking place there. But most Iraqis in the non-Sunni areas, suffered even more during Sadaam's regime - and one of those who suffered then, along with his family, was Sabah. First they suffered the terror of Sadaam, and now they suffer the terrorism of the suicide bombers (originating from outside Iraq). Today, it was just too close to call.

Sabah and his wife were teachers of English during Sadaam's regime, and were forced to go into hiding until the U.S. entered Iraq (so his English is pretty good). Here is Sabah's email (here is the article he refers to in his email), received [Sat, 16 Jul 2005 14:30:56 -0700 (PDT)]:

Dear Richard,

Thanks for both your emails. I read the interesting article. Such debates are common to us. People may go in a vicious circle in case of trying to convince those who encourage the terrorists - I guess such persons or groups who defend the terrorists are very little to check sites like this so that they can in turn improve themselves for democracy world. The mission is not to agitate such subjects among people whom are considered as educated people, it is rather how to communicate with those rural people who work as a nest to terrorists.

I'm Sorry to tell you that today evening at 7:00 pm here in my city a suicide blast occurred killing 60 and injuring 90 while I was doing my shopping. Just 50 meters from me it occurred ! The blast caused by a fuel tank-car driven by a suicide bomber exploded in the center of our city directly in front of the main town mosque. The place usually crowded by different people who usually do their marketing or sitting in casinos for a short rest. Most of the people are civil citizens- women , children & old men.

I suddenly found myself thrown into one of those foodstuff shops. Huge flames were running to everywhere. Splinters were thrown all around. We kept stick on the flour sacks hearing the thrown flying splinters over the place.

Then I tried to hurry back to the place of the event but the flame was horribly burning. My elder son who was running his little internet caffe' - only 90 meters far from the targetted area became terrified, crying in horror, running searching his father. Soon he got to me and he hugged me with faint dying face. I tried to satisfy him that things were o.k. But I dully worried about my two other sons-Saeed who used to do his body building practice in a sport club 25 meters far from the mosque , and Shams whose one of his friend already told me that he had his short talk with him.

My son , while crying, begged me not to go back to the burning place saying it might be targetted again by another attempt to kill more people. His partner in the cafe' begged to accompany me in his van to take me back home 3 kilometer far to check if my other sons were at home.

Fortunately once I arrived home I found my 2 other sons there. They in turn were asking everyone coming from the site. Our neighbour, whom I met him near to the place where the blast made increased my worry. Thanks to God I found him too already arrived his home.
But still my brother with his son - whose T.V. & Satilite workshop is close to the mosque - 25 meters far-did not call or contact me! I cannot go back to check about their desting!

Now it is nearly midnight and I have been trying to contact him but telephone lines are cut. Along the way from where the blast happened till my residency , hundreds of mob were running aimlessly. They did not know where to go and whoever they ask to inquire abiut their relatives and friends.

Now I am so tired to continue my message. So only excuse me. Till tomorrow, pray to find my brother safe with his son.

Will continue tomorow. Please , keep in touch.

Note: Unfortunately I weren't carrying my digital camera to register the hell itself! Till tomorrow, then have my best wishes & regards

Sabah
Babylon, Iraq. AL-MUSSAYEB district.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sabah, his family, and his neighbors. It's not as though Sabah doesn't already have enough to worry about, without having to worry about suicide bombers while shopping. We'll try to update you on the aftermath as we hear back from him.

UPDATE:

Dear Richard,
Thanks much your contact and interest. I am going now to check for my brother and his sons fate. I will picture some sites referred.

Keep in mind what is issued in Yahoo is not accurate. The news said(Suicide Blast Kills 54 at Iraq Gas Station) By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer, this news together with the picture is not accurate. Try to draw the attention of Yahoo concerned people who are in charge.

The gas station is far about 1 km distance. When the picture showed an isolated place whereas the post is in midst of buildings. It is at the center of the local public market.

I'll check to register those important sites by my digital camera.

Will continue later. All the best,
Sabah

THIS is the story that Sabah says is incorrect.

I love the honesty and simplicity of Sabah. His heart is focussed in the right place. I pray that he will continue to live through all of these crises and that he and his friends will be strengthened and freed from the terror that surrounds them.

Thanks for the update and Sabah has done a wonderful job with a great piece of journalism that is unequalled in the press anywhere in the world today.
