Chuck Schumer Caught On Cell Phone: 'We're going to war over Supreme Court'

Drudge is reporting what we all knew was the case - it doesn't matter who President Bush's nominee is, the Democrats will fight against him or her to prevent an overall makeup of the court that rules on the constitution instead of ruling in accordance with their own agenda.

Schumer promised a fight over whoever the President's nominee was: "It's not about an individual judge... It's about how it affects the overall makeup of the court."

The chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was overheard on a long cellphone conversation with an unknown political ally, and the DRUDGE REPORT was there!

As to the matter of Democratic opposition to President Bush's nominee affecting his decision, I agree with John Hinderaker at Powerline who writes that the President "is a man of principle who understands the stakes involved in this nomination." As noted at Powerline, President Bush has said in the past that the Justices he admires most are Scalia and Thomas.

So I think that the Democrats are unlikely to scare the President away from nominating exactly who he sincerely believes to be the best candidate, more likely a conservative.
