British Muslims: We can't stop extremism - In other words, it's not us, must be you!

Topics: Understanding Islam

Slap me silly and call me stupid, but isn't the excuse coming from Muslims of "underachievement in education, a high rate of unemployment, discrimination in the workplace, social exclusion, and also the government's own policies, especially in Iraq" getting a little old? It's never Islam, it's always you guys!

- Chicago Sun Times [...] Muslim leaders warned that the Muslim community alone could not eliminate extremism and called for an independent judicial probe into what may have motivated the bombers.

(...) The scale of disenchantment amongst Muslim youth is very clear to see,'' said Inayat Bungalwala of the Muslim Council of Britain. ''Various factors are at play: underachievement in education; a high rate of unemployment; discrimination in the workplace; social exclusion, and also the government's own policies, especially in Iraq."

(...)The demand for an inquiry appeared to reflect Muslim concerns about the impact of social problems in their communities even as they seek to distance themselves from the attacks.

Odd thing, literally ever single reason given by the British Muslims as contributing to terrorism, with the exception of the Iraq excuse, has also been described as conditions behind problems some Blacks and Hispanics have experienced in America. But I've never heard of a Black or Hispanic person in America strapping on a belt of explosives and then going out to a public place to become a suicide bomber to murder and maim innocent people. Why is it just a Muslim thing?

Have the British Muslim leaders considered that it might, it just might, have something to do with the way that Islam can be interpreted by those wishing to take away from it whatever they wish to believe? Have they ever considered reforming Islam and what Islamists find so easy to believe it stands for?
