Abu Musab al Zaraqawi's al Qaeda Claims Abduction of Egyptian Ambassador

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

Why am I not surprised that the dark hand of Zarqawi is behind the abduction of Ihab Sherif and that of other diplomats in Iraq!

Evan Kohlmann at The Counterterrorism Blog wants everyone to know that al Qaeda in Iraq has claimed the kidnapping of the Egyptian ambassador Ihab Sherif.

Rusty Shackleford's Jawa Report had previously speculated that Ihab Sherif's kidnapping was probably done by ex-Baathist elements, but it now appears that the Egyptian ambassador's kidnapping, as well as the attack on diplomats from Pakistan and Bahrain this morning, were all linked to al Qaeda. This bodes ill for Sherif since, as noted by Jawa Report, Egypt isn't exactly on friendly terms with al Qaeda and "not even on friendly terms with Islamist political movements in general." Unfortunately, Ihab Sherif is as good as dead.
