UK Doctors to debate euthanasia law
Topics: Euthanasia advocacyDoctors in the UK will debate whether the law should be relaxed to allow terminally ill patients the right to die.
(...) Dr Michael Wilks, chairman of the BMA's ethics committee, said it was right that doctors discussed the issue.
(...) He said they would explore whether there was a difference between assisted suicide, whereby medics provide the means for a patient to kill themselves, and voluntary euthanasia, when a patient is too ill to administer the lethal medication, but consents to someone else doing it.
(...)"I am particularly interested in the views of doctors on the distinction between assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia and whether my bill should be limited to one or the other, or should include both.
(...) "Increasingly doctors are recognising that a new understanding about end of life matters is required that gives the patient the final say. At the same time, we must respect and protect the position of medical professionals. I want the law to be transparent for everybody."
