U.S.: Syria must do more to secure border

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

While a sweeping crackdown by the U.S. military on insurgents near the Syrian border that killed at least 75 fighters in Anbar province, the U.S. State Department is saying that Syria needs to do more to stop insurgents from using its soil to stage attacks in Iraq.

Vince Aut Morire suggests that the sight of American warplanes over Damascus would resolve the issue and I'm inclined to agree. With attacks on U.S. forces by insurgents and foreign jihadists occuring as a direct result of Syria having either actively or passively provided them sanctuary and an open door into Iraq, a de-facto war already exists between Syria and Iraq. Since Iraqi defense involves the Coalition forces for now, the only sure way of stoping the insurgency is to shut-off it's funding and "warm bodies" that serve as a reservoir for suicide bombers in Iraq.
