Iraqi leaders must show unity to defeat the death cult

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

An op-ed piece in Lebanon's Daily Star(Beirut) asks today just "what does an Iraqi mother tell her children about their home and countrymen? What future do the gunmen and bombers who are killing and maiming their countrymen want for Iraq?" The piece buttresses my own view that Iraq's politicians have stumbled since election day, leaving a vacuum that the insurgents have filled with the dead bodies of their fellow Iraqi countrymen, as well as numerous Coalition troops and contractors. Owing to the vacuum, and directly resulting from the relentless squabling and delay in establishing the government, ethnic divisions are deepening, especially in northern Iraq, and the Iraqis are paying for the disorder with their lives.

The insurgents and foreign terrorists have made it clear what they are against - not being in power, and have rejected the democratic process of having a voice in the government. They don't want just a voice, they want the ONLY voice. And, as the op-ed piece continues, " The callous bid by the gunmen to exterminate their own people actually makes the case of U.S. President George W. Bush who has at least offered Iraqis a vision of a peaceful and prosperous future. Other than representing a death cult what do the gunmen stand for? So far they have offered nothing but misery to the people of Iraq."

Read the excellent piece with a moderate view from a middle easterner's perspective.
