Fact or Fantasy: Al-Zarqawi Reportedly Killed Or Seriously Wounded
Topics: Middle East News and PerspectivesAccording to Colonel Fouad Hani Hassan, commander of the fifth division of the Iraqi armed forces, cited by 'Elaph', a popular website in the Arab world, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is seriously injured or dead. We've heard reports of al-Zarqawi's demise or capture before, so let's hope that the report is true but be prepared to continue the hunt!
Captain Ed says he's not banking on Zarqawi's demise until he sees pictures of the body. But he suggests that the timing makes sense in the context of the concentration of foreign fighters at the Syrian border and the resources they have used in fighting the Iraqi-American contingent. He notes that the insurgents and jihadists obviously(are reported to have) have access to better weapons and better training than some of the so-called insurgents in central Iraq, who now almost entirely rely on suicide bombers(who are essentially 100 percent foreigners). It does make sense that Zarqawi would have been in the operational area, coordinating the recruitment, training, and disposition of terrorist militia near the Syrian lines of communication that have kept his operation alive, up to now.
