Key Taliban commander killed, other arrested in Afghanistan

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

We don't hear much in the media about Afghanistan anymore, but our troops are still fighting and dying there so that the gains in that country aren't reversed by Islamic extremists and the residues of the Taliban. So it's welcome news that not only has a key Taliban commander been killed, but that another one has been taken out of action, and that their capture is expected to have a major impact on security there. The more secure the area, the safer it is for our forces.

Afghan military forces have killed a key commander of the ousted Taliban militia and captured another important militant in south-central Afghanistan, the military said today. Mullah Besmillah, a key Taliban leader in troubled south-central Uruzgan province, was killed in fighting with Afghan soldiers late yesterday when another militant, Mullah Abdul Manan, was captured. According to General Muslim Hamed, the Afghan military commander in southern Afghanistan, they were both the Taliban's key commanders in the region and their capture will have a major impact on security.
