More about PVS
Topics: Terri Schiavo's Life CountsKatrina Maguire at Cait's Oz Blogs writes that it's time that the medical profession discarded the concept of a "Persistent Vegetative State" as a meaningless hypothesis.
Certainly, for many people the concept of PVS has great appeal for both economic and social reasons. The world according to them can do without people who are unable to respond in a meaningful, purposeful way and are unable to do anything for themselves.
But, medicine is not about economics and usefulness. At least we hope not. It's supposed to be about the welfare of human beings.
As far as the Schiavo case is concerned it would seem that Judge George Greer has learned little about the history of PVS, even in law. I wonder if he is aware of the Gannon v. Albany Memorial Hospital case?
