"Newsday Series: The Terri Schiavo Case"
On Sept. 3, 2002, Mary and Bob Schindler, Terri's father, readied their daughter for Dr. William Hammesfahr, a Clearwater neurologist who would spend three hours tugging at Terri's limbs, reading her expressions and movements, searching for evidence of the awareness the Schindlers, their other children and friends swear is still very much inside Terri's body.

... The doctor began the examination by playing a recording of an up-tempo, jaunty version of "The Christmas Song," one of Terri's favorites from years earlier.

... As the song started, she looked faintly confused and uncomfortable. By the end of the first verse, her expression suddenly changed into what looked like surprised recognition. She made a noise that sounded like laughter, and she seemed to smile. She tossed her head back. She listened to the rest of the song, her expression more relaxed.

... These and other reactions she would have later are not those of a vegetative person, her parents said. Dr. Hammesfahr concluded the same.

How can we allow the killing of someone so full of life, and what is Michael Schiavo afraid that she will say?

We have a great country and most of us, with the right information, will make the right decision most of the time. Unfortunately, that's the problem, the truth just hasn't been told. The mainstream media can help bloggers get the truth out, that Terri Schiavo is not in a persistent vegetative state, and we have no right to deny this her an opportunity to show all of us that she wants to live. Let her return to her parents, get the best rehabilitation possible, and give her time to receive the therapy that her husband has denied her for fifteen years.

Not only did Michael Schiavo deny Terri therapy, as she was being slowly starved to death following the judge-ordered removal of her life-sustaining feeding tube in October 2003, Michael Schiavo would not even allow a revered Roman Catholic priest to administer Holy Communion to Terri, denying a Roman Catholic Last Rites.

I can't help but wonder how most of us have stayed on the sidelines as observers all these years and let this travesty of justice and collective inhumanity go on so long under the cover of politics and law. Why couldn't we have all just agreed to have given Terri her chance to show us what the "real" experts have been saying all along. It's still not too late to do the right thing!

Please let me suggest this idea:

It might be the solution. At least it is worth the statement.
