Father Frank Pavone Speaks on Terri Schiavo: Can the court starve Terri to death?Topics: Terri Schiavo's Life Counts
I received this a few minutes ago from Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, with a request to get it to Terri's bloggers.
- Press Release by Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, Feb 15, 2005.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Terri Schiavo is not dying. She has no terminal illness. She is not in a coma. She is not on life-support equipment. She is not alone, but rather has loving parents and siblings ready to care for her for the rest of her life. She has not requested death.
A battle rages over whether she should be starved to death. Schiavo sustained brain injuries and cannot speak or eat normally. Nevertheless, the only tube attached to her is a small, simple, painless feeding tube that provides her nourishment directly to her digestive system. Her legal guardian is her husband, who already has another woman -- by whom he also has children. He wants Terri Schiavo's feeding tube removed. Of course, he could simply allow her to be cared for by her parents and siblings and get on with his life, but he refuses.
I have had two opportunities to visit Terri Schiavo, most recently on the first Sunday of February. I have been able to talk to her, to listen to her struggle to speak, to watch her focus her eyes and smile and attempt to kiss her parents. I have prayed with her, blessed her, and assured her that she has many friends around the country and around the world, who love her and want her to enjoy the same protections we all enjoy, even when we're wounded.
News articles have recently characterized Terri's situation by saying that some want to keep her alive against her husband's wishes. But Terri Schiavo is not dying. What does keeping her alive mean, if not the same thing as keeping you and me alive -- that is, by giving us adequate food, shelter, and care?
Some say that Terri's family should let her go. But this is not a matter of letting her go, because she isn't going anywhere. If, however, she is deprived of nourishment, then she would slowly die in the same way that any of us would slowly die if we were deprived of nourishment. It is called starvation. If the courts permit that to happen, then why should that permission apply only in Terri Schiavo's case? There would be no way to limit it to her case alone. Countless others would follow, and their deaths would be described as letting them die instead of killing them.
Where, indeed, does the state get the authority to starve people? Court decisions permitting this lack all authority, as Pope John Paul II teaches in Section 72 of The Gospel of Life. These decisions cannot be obeyed, because they are not binding on the conscience and are in fact acts of violence.
At the present time, there are two simple things you can do. Educate your neighbors about this situation. A section of the PriestsforLife.org Web site is devoted to educating people about her case.
Second, contact anyone you know in Florida and ask them to encourage Gov. Jeb Bush and members of the Florida Legislature to continue doing everything possible to save Terri Schiavo's life.

I simply can't fathom Michael Schiavo's attitude -- unless to explain it as downright evil and vindictive. Why, indeed, does he not release Terri to the care of her own family, divorce her, and get on with his own life? That would be the loving thing to do. Why is it so crucial to him for Terri to die? It's simply frightening to read his comments and see his actions. May God open his eyes so that he can just simply let her go and let her live.

Michael claims to be her husband with all the rights to make decisions about her care, yet continues to live in an adulterous relationship with a woman with whom he has two children.
Isn't adultery considered to be grounds for divorce? Why can't Terry divorce Michael?

I pray that Terri will be given the right to live she is not in a coma she knows what is happening around her and she tries to respond and i believe with therapy she could, her "husband" needs to walk away and let her parents take her home and give her the love and care she needs. GOD bless them they want to do just that and they need the chance before they get to old. Our justice system needs to be over hauled it is getting scarry, does no one one the bench believe life is sacred? As i pray for abortion to end i pray for Terri and anyone in her condition. Just a couple of days ago we read about a woman in a coma for 20 years who started speaking. GOD is speaking and telling us ALL people are important to HIM and should be to us. WAKE UP LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF GOD.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why Michael Schiavo is so bent of murdering his wife. The man shows a mean-spiritedness that is beyond reason. Also, I always thought that extraordinary means was removing a person a life support system, not starving them to death.
How did we reach this callousness in this country? I believe the beginning was with the Supreme Court decision on January 22, 1973 when they said it was ok to murder babies. God Help us.

Does Michael know what LOVE is? If he did, he would know God!! And only God has the right to take a life. I wonder what kind of a love relationship he has with his wife now and his children! They have to be suffering in some way too because of his behavior! I would not want to live with his conscience!

I wonder if someone offered to give Michael
the amount of insurance money he is looking for , would he let Teri's parents take over custody. I believe it is all about the insurance.

God help us!! Pray! Pray! Pray!

Michael would want Terri to die, as opposed to releasing her to her parents, b/c if he is the cause of her injury, and if she then got rehabilitated and could someday talk again, then he's busted for attempted murder!! That's what I believe is the case here. It makes me sick.

Michael is committing adultry and now wants to murder his wife and this supposedly Judge Greer, who or what is he? All I see is EVIL EVIL EVIL! I pray that Terri comes completely out of this illness and tells the whole truth, what Michael really did to her. He tried to murder her!
LORD HEAR OUR PRAYERS.

How can our courts be so blind to the truth. Taking Terri's feeding tube out would be murder, plan and simple. It scares me that a man like Michael Shiavo can have this kind of control. lord help us.

At the conclusion of WWII, the world discoverd with horror what went on inside Germany's Consentration Camps. One of the punishment inflicted upon prisoners was death by starvation. One of its most famous victim was St Maximilian. At the Nuremberg trial as well as subsequent trials, the Nazis defense " I followed orders" or "It was the law" was of no avail. They were found GUILTY and rightly so.
How can those who want Terri dead look themselves in the mirror every morning? They are no better than the Nazis!

My prayers are for all of the people involved in this case, especailly Michael needs God in his heart and his life.. When we are young and frivolous, especially in our teens and twenties, we make whiant to be a burden on amyone". But as we grow in the Lord, we see the value of life and suffering for all those involved and realize that God has a purpose for all of this.T his suffering brings people closer to God and one finally sees the LIGHT and the wisdom in all of this. Michael does not understand that when Terry made comments like that, she was young and" a baby" in Christ as most of us are then. We do not see the value of suffering, for ourselves and for our families... and God's purpose....
Also, the battle is in spiritual warfare...and we need to come against all that evil , in the NAME of JESUS, that is being fought continually. We need to pray ,petition the powers that be, and go to Our Lady who will powerfully intercede for this particular case.....
Posted by: Lu Ann Malkin at February 16, 2005 3:44 PM
Please, Momma Mary, intercede for Terri. Srepresents each and everyone of us. We are one body, one body in Christ!
Convert the heart of her husband. Give strenght to the desicion makers to do God's Will not Michael's.
May God protect her and the angels cover her in her wait.
We love You, our God, We love You ourFather, we love Your, the Author of our life.

With all that I read about this case, I cannot understand why there doesn't seem to be any accountability. Just in the little bit that I see, this woman seems to have some awareness of what is going on around her. Nurses have testified that she has spoken, or at least tried. It almost seems that there is some kind of conspiracy between the judicial and the husband to end her life. Isn't there any kind of oversight to answer all of the questions that have arisen reguarding Terri's condition. It seems that everything that has been introduced to bolster the parents case has been shot down without any investigation into its accuracy. Considering that this is actually a case of life and death, shouldn't the court be more willing to see if what the parents and several others have testified to, may actually hold some merit? The people who actually love this woman are being ignored. There seem to be so many questions of conflict of interest here, yet the wheels of justice keep moving on to deprive this woman and her family of her life. I believe that God is watching this case, and i honestly fear what the consequences will be if Terri's husband and the courts succeed in ending her life.

I just read Jim Boggie post. I have been actively involved in Terri's Fight for 4 years. I can tell you this: It is pure evil and the Fl. Judicial System is corrupt, esp. in Pinellas & Pasco Counties. This is pure and simple a "Euthanasia" protocal rising from the depths of Hell. It involves corruption, collusion, lying, fraud, an aberrant Judge, George Greer, among others, who are abrogating, denying and abolishing U.S. and Florida Constitutional Rights, ignoring Fl. Law and Statutes, and our Nation's Bill of Rights. In fact, Judge Greer turns out to probably be an "illegal" judge and has been making up his own rules & laws in this case, with Michael Schiavo & Lawyer G. Felos winning every round under the influence & judgements of Greer. Every motion by the Schindler's to bring Affidavits, exacting evidence, probity and truth forward has been shot down by Greer (Judges Baird & Demmer) and the Fl. Courts (in-cluding the Senate Maj. Leader King James). Judge Greer (a Dr. Death advocate) needs to be impeached and removed from this case immediate-ly. One final thought, NO Judge or Court in this Nation would allow a death row execution by way of this most heinous, tortuous, and painful of deaths: Execution by Starvation and Dehydration (which can take from 7 to 14 days). Why would it ever be used to kill a living, breathing, INNOCENT Human Being like Terri who is NOT PVS, NOT in a COMA, NOT Dying and NOT on ARTIFICIAL LIFE SUPPORT. She HAS every right to live out her life with her family and friends who love her until God calls her home. We must proactively defend her Right to Life. Storm Heaven with prayers and even call upon the President of the U.S. and the U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to stop this TRAVESTY of Evil and Fl. Judicial Tryanny against Terry Schiavo, her family and ALL OF US. If we as citizens of this great Nation allow this evil injustice and murder of Terri Schiavo, we are no better than Hitler and the Nazi's.

Michael Schiavo is living in an adulterous relationship with another woman. He broke the marriage vows. He wants Terri DEAD so he can legally marry his mistress. He doesn't love Terri. He stopped loving her when he refused the rehabilitation for her.
Terri deserves to live and to get any kind of therapy possible. Our Lady of Guadaloupe, protector of the Unborn (and in this case, the disabled), please watch over Terri and help her "husband" see that what he is doing is wrong.
God be with you Terri!

If Terri is a Catholic, how do the courts have the rights to deny Holy Communion to her???
Terry could live on Holy Communion. It has happened to saints. Some have lived for years on Holy Communion.
Has Terry received the Annointing of the Sick?

May all of those people on this site who have broken the commandments by ignorantly passing judgement on Michael Schiavo be rewarded by the punishment prescribed by their own god - Then one day you can accuse him face to face when you meet in hell.

I feel sad for Terri, yet I am pleased she is finally at peace. I am HORRIFIED by the actions of those who purport to support her family. I agree with the woman who spoke about "Christian attitude." To me, I found such a lack of Christian attitude and hypocrisy. Judge not lest ye be judged. Whatever happened to the answer that parents give at a wedding when the minister asks,"Who gives this child?" The parents give up their child to the husband. The Catholic Church,an immoral bunch if I EVER saw one, has no right talking about morality--how many of their priests have been pedophiles? A total and complete disgrace, and a sad legacy to Terri's life and death. And with Congress trying to change the Constitution, I am ashamed to be an American. (I certainly am no longer a Republican.)
God bless Terri Shiavo. May God take care of the Tom DeLay's, Randall Terry's, Jesse Jackson's, Father Pavel's and all their ilk.--Ron Medvin
YOUR organization is a total disgrace to humanity. "Forgive them for they did not know what they did." SHAME on you, Father Frank...Learn to tell the truth...something brand new for the Catholic Church. And CLEAN UP "THE INSIDE OF YOUR CUP"!!!!!!!!!!! How many hundreds of millions of dollars have been paid by the church because their priests can't keep their hands off boys. They make Michael Jackson look like a saint!!
