Update from Kurdistan on the Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab Al-Zarkawi

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

Update from Kurdish sources on the rumors of the capture of Abu Musab Al-Zarkawi in Northern Iraq. Net result, we still don't have a definitive yes or no but it looks like we are getting warmer.....

First from the Kurdistan Observer:

According to IsraelNN.com, Kurdish sources are reporting that Iraqi security forces have captured the Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab Al-Zarkawi. Zarkawi is thought to be the leader of much of the anti-American, Islamist insurgency in Iraq and a local commander for Al-Qaeda. While official Iraqi sources have yet to confirm or deny these reports, media outlets throughout the Middle East are repeating the Kurdish reports.

Next, an email received here at Hyscience from a Kurdistani blogger friend, Kurdo's World:

Dear doctor,
Yes I have heard some reports about that qouting Kurdish sources but it has not been confirmed yet. The PUKMedia.com (website for Talabani's PUK party) website reported yesterday that the US embassy in Baghdad has denied the claims but as you might expect the PUK might have worked independently of US this time.

The PUK's intelligence in Baquba and Tikrit and Kirkuk are very powerful. They might have captured someone important but they might not be very sure of his identity.

Best regards and warmest greetings.
Kurdo

I didn't find anything on Zarqawi in today's IsraelNN.com news reports but as the Kurdistan Observer mentions, media all over the Middle East have reported on the purported capture. For now though we will keep reporting it as strongly-rumored but with reservations until proven.
