Tsunami Roy - Miracle of the baby named for disaster

This is day-old news but it goes well with the only other tsunami-related "feel good" stories I have about children so far. The other two are here (miracle baby) and here (school girl saves tourists). Now we have this story about Tsunami Roy.

WHILE the Boxing Day tidal wave was destroying his parents' village and killing so many of their neighbours, this baby boy slipped quietly into the world.

Tsunami Roy was born in woods above a wrecked village in the remote Andaman and Nicobar islands after his parents fled for their lives when the water surged in.

Last night his proud parents described how their miracle child was born on the day of a disaster which killed more than 125,000 people around the Indian Ocean.

His father Lakshmi Narain Roy, 34, said he grabbed his six-year-old elder son and pregnant wife Namita, put them in a rickshaw and pedalled for the hills as the tsunami began to engulf their coastal settlement of Hut Bay.

His wife fell and briefly lost consciousness, but managed to revive herself when she heard people screaming "the water is coming".

As the family and some of their lucky neighbours who escaped watched the water destroy their homes, Mrs Roy, 26, began to complain of a pain in her abdomen.  Continue reading...
