Tsunami decimates Aceh's child population

Aid workers stepping up a measles vaccination campaign for children on the west coast of Indonesia's tsunami-ravaged Aceh province are finding, to their horror, that few under the age of seven are turning up.
Shannon Strother, the senior emergency response official for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in the town of Meulaboh, says this suggests that a large proportion of that age group may have died in communities hit by the December 26 tsunami.
"(The demographics) have changed dramatically," Ms Strother said.
"Certainly it could be possible that we've lost a large proportion of the population, one- to seven-year-olds." Read more...
