Three shot dead in Aceh: reports
Topics: Southeast Asia Earthquake and TsunamiABCNEWSonline (Australia) Jan 3,
There are fears of a new outbreak of violence in the tsunami devastated
province of Aceh, with reports that three policemen have been shot
dead.
It is still unclear whether the deaths were the work of independence rebels.
United Nations (UN) officials in the Indonesian capital Jakarta say three policemen were shot dead in Banda Aceh city where increasing numbers of tsunami victims are sheltering in makeshift camps.
If independence rebels are responsible, the shootings would contravene a cease-fire called last week to help the relief effort.
The rebels have waged a separatist war in Aceh for decades.
The UN says if rebels are to blame for the shootings it would have disturbing implications for the relief operation.
Thousands of tsunami victims are still in desperate need of food and shelter.
At least 94,000 Acehenese have died in the disaster. Source...
