Israel to ask Abbas to fight attacks

Israel will ask new Palestinian Authority Chairman-elect Mahmoud Abbas to immediately renew security coordination and deploy PA security personnel at Gaza locations used to fire mortar shells and Kassam rockets, senior diplomatic officials said Sunday night.

These actions, the officials said, are among those Abbas should be able to take without risking civil war.

If these steps are taken, the officials added, Israel will respond in kind with steps of its own. One official in the Prime Minister's Office said that based on the positive experience of the last few days during which Israel removed its troops from the Palestinian population centers, Jerusalem will now be willing to talk to the PA about making this a long-term arrangement.  Read more...
