Hey Nicaragua, What about those SAM-7s?

Topics: War on Terror

Updated.
Another hat tip to Drudge ( he needs the help). Roth Report keeps beating him on the news of real importance - but of course Wes is smart enough to establish a close relationship with Blogs.

(...)  Nicaragua destroyed 333 anti-aircraft missiles Thursday, further paring down a stockpile that had previously been estimated at about 2,000 missiles left over from the 1980s Contra war.

The U.S. government has long urged Nicaragua to destroy all of the SA-7 shoulder-fired missiles, expressing concern they could fall into the hands of terrorists.

The Nicaraguan Army said it had destroyed the weapons "in order to achieve a reasonable balance of forces and promote stability, confidence and transparency in the region."

The army destroyed about the same number of missiles in May and says it wants to hang on to only about 400 of the missiles, arguing they are needed to offset neighboring Honduras' military capabilities.
(MANAGUA, Nicaragua July 29, 2004)

Today we hear that:
Nicaraguan police, with U.S. assistance in a sting operation, thwarted black marketeers trying to sell SA-7 shoulder-fired missiles capable of downing commercial aircraft earlier this month, raising fears that some missiles already have been sold to terrorists.

(...)  U.S. officials think the missiles are being provided by elements of the Nicaraguan military. One official said intelligence reports suggest Nicaraguan army elements are keeping a secret stash of SA-7s not inventoried by international inspectors.

The U.S. cannot afford to let some backwater left-leaning country like Nicaraqua mishandle weapons and have them end-up in the hands of terrorists that attack America. It's long past time to use whatever means are necessary to bring pressure on the Nicaraquan military and political leadership - the thugs that are responsible for these attempts to sell weapons to terrorists.

Recall that in Nov 2004 we heard that:
"Nicaragua promises to eliminate all of its surface-to-air missiles."

President Enrique Bolanos told U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld yesterday that Nicaragua would eliminate a stockpile of hundreds of surface-to-air missiles with no expectation of compensation from the United States.

Bolanos said the anti-aircraft missiles would be destroyed within a year and a half.

Why not right away? So that they would have to funnel some out to the black market for a little spare change.

Update: Other coverage by Backcountry Conservative.

Update 2: Powerline has more commentary to add to the story.

I agree. Wes beats Drudge to the punch time and time again. His site is much more worthy to read than Drudge with both the variety of news and the constat updates.
