Con: Should the Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wade decision stand?

Topics: Life Issues

Opinion - Mary Traeger (News-Leader.com)
Expanding medical knowledge shows that life begins with conception, and must be nurtured.

Up until the last 30 years, Americans have always accepted the fact that, "The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God," as John F. Kennedy said in his inaugural address.

With the Roe v. Wade decision on Jan. 22, 1973, the Supreme Court unconscionably negated the right to life for the unborn. Since that fatal decision, 45 million unborn babies have been aborted.

New scientific knowledge has been learned since 1973. It is time we have an honest debate about abortion and the consequences to women who abort their babies.

The Supreme Court judges in 1973 used quaint terminology such as "quickening" to make their tragic decision which eventually opened the floodgates to permit abortion for any reason.

We now have sophisticated cameras which can view the movements of the baby in the womb.

We now know this baby can swallow, sleep, smile, kick and suck its thumb. Moreover, babies as young as 27 weeks' gestation not only survive but thrive.

Ultrasound pictures of babies in the womb have produced their earliest photo album portrait.

Also, many successful delicate surgeries have been performed on babies in the womb which would never have been possible in 1973.

For 32 years the pro-abortion advocates have lectured about being "pro-choice," which is a misnomer. They circle the wagons when anyone chooses another option than abortion.

Pro-abortion zealots have strenuously fought to keep their culture of death intact by bringing court battles against any new law passed to limit abortion or to even inform women about the dire consequences that abortion presents to their health and emotional well-being.

Further disdain dictated by the pro-abortion crowd is their constant clarion call to allow "choice," and yet they will not consent to medical and pharmaceutical professionals the "choice" of following their own consciences to opt out of providing abortion services. This is utter hypocrisy.

Life begins at conception. The only way the unborn can continue their right to life is to be born.

There is no medical confusion about the fact that the unborn child is a human being. He is created with all the rights you enjoy.

Recently, most of us were shocked at the lives taken by the Indian Ocean tsunami. We should feel the same revulsion about the approximately 1.3 million babies aborted each year in the United States.

The tsunami was not our choice; continued abortions are.
