Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee Calls Immigration Reform Legislation Racist, Un-Christian
Topics:It seems that Arkansas is putting through legislation asking for verified identification for voting and denying taxpayer funded benefits and services to those illegally in the U.S. Arizona put the same thing in place with Proposition 200, approved in November 2004, but apparently it doesn't sound reasonable or "Christian" to the current Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee.
This issue has Dan at Digger's Realm all steamed up.
(...) Gov. Mike Huckabee on Thursday heaped criticism upon immigration legislation in the Arkansas Legislature, describing it as "inflammatory . . . race-baiting and demagoguery." He also challenged the Christian values of its main sponsor.
(...) Huckabee said the bill, seeking to forbid public assistance and voting rights to undocumented immigrants, "inflames those who are racist and bigots and makes them think there's a real problem. But there's not."
(...) The bill is modeled after Proposition 200, approved by Arizona voters in November. The Arkansas measure was filed by Republican Sens. Jim Holt of Springdale and Denny Altes of Fort Smith.
I don't quite understand how "doing the Christian good and ignoring the law" relate to each other or either to becoming a "monk or priest" since most monks and priests I know are Christians and do good but they don't believe in breaking the law.
However, in regard to this character (meaning is one, not has) Mike
Huckabee, I have to agree with Dan that the governor should certainly
strive to encourage folks to obey the law, not to flagrantly disregard
it as is done by those who sneak into our country illegally - then use
and drain our resources that we pay for and that are intended for the
use of our own citizens.
And the governor is absolutely wrong to pull the out the Jessie Jackson race card hat trick on this, and just as wrong on bringing religion into the issue. The issues of emergency health services and food for the needy are moral issues and issues of humanity that we'll have to address one way or another, sooner or later. But when providing for the needs of the poor runs head-on against the interests and the laws of our land, we are faced with moral, religious, and legal dilemmas.
The only solution that addresses all three of these issues is to provide for any required emergency health care, provide for their basic human needs such as food, basic clothing, and temporary shelter, then purchase for them a bus ticket back to where they came from, help them on the bus, and escort them out of the country that they entered into illegally.
You'll notice that not one of my proposed solutions involved or had anything whatsoever to do with giving them drivers licenses, voter registration cards, or free college educations.
