Huge response to tsunami appeal
Topics: Southeast Asia Earthquake and TsunamiThe world is responding to the tsunami disaster, and the response is almost as epic as the disaster that made it necessary. The outpouring of compassion is heart-warming, and the compassion now being transferred to dollars(pounds, etc.) is huge.

PEOPLE worldwide have jammed phone lines and websites today to give
millions of dollars to the victims of Asia's tsunamis, outpacing their
own governments in their generosity.
The American Red Cross said that as of noon yesterday it had collected $US18 million ($23.3 million).
Finns lined up in the cold in Helsinki to contribute. The country of
just 5 million people quickly raised $US4 million ($5.8 million).
Italians raised $US17 million ($22.0 million) by sending special text messages on their mobile phones.
Even Amazon.com collected $US4.8 million ($6.2 million) in donations from online shoppers at its website. Continue reading...
Britain's Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) said it had collected the
equivalent of $US39 million ($50.5 million), less than a day after
launching an appeal on behalf of 12 top British charities.
