Some Media Claim That Praises Of Arafat By Press And World Leaders A Distortion Of Truth.

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

Arafat, the father of the suicide bomber, continues to be praised by many world leaders and the world press who collectively distort the truth of his life, according to a growing group of media outlets. For example:

CAMERA writes that USA Today's Arafat Obituary Distorts History.

"Yasir Arafat is buried as he lived, in a shroud of lies. These include lies of commission, omission and of minor facts used to obscure larger truths. Common in coverage of Arafat's death, they stem from uncritical acceptance of conventional wisdom as much as from any intent to deceive. But they are nonetheless dangerous, contributing to revisionist Arab-Israeli history."

"Such errors undermine, for example, USA Today's November 11 Arafat obituary. Barbara Slavin, an experienced writer on Middle East topics for USA Today, is often well-informed and balanced. But her analytical obituary, " 'The best and the worst of us': Arafat pushed Palestinian cause into the global spotlight" includes numerous distortions in both the article and accompanying chronology, as well as tendentious word usage."

And as for France as reported by Haaretz:

"French President Jacques Chirac hailed Arafat on Thursday as a man of courage and conviction who embodied the Palestinian struggle for a state."

"It is with emotion that I have just learnt of the death of President Yasser Arafat, the first elected president of the Palestinian Authority," Chirac said in a written statement. "I offer my very sincere condolences to his family and to people close to him." Chirac, who had visited Arafat days before his death, called him a "man of courage and conviction who, for 40 years, has incarnated the Palestinians' combat for recognition of their national rights."

And that Arafat was an enigma.........

And from the Israelinsider;

"........ Suha's "special someone" was implicated in Sabra and Shatila massacre. French officials following the Arafat dead-or-alive fiasco were floored to discover that Suha Arafat's constant companion and financial adviser is none other than Pierre Rizk. Like her a Maronite Christian (although she went through a "conversion" to Islam when she married Yasser), Rizk headed the Phalangist intelligence service during the Lebanese civil war and was in close personal contact with the guerrilla group which carried out the massacre of hundreds of Palestinians at the Sabra and Shatilla refugee camp in 1982."

"An ally of Israel, Rizk was at the time the chief deputy of ElieHobeika, widely held directly responsible for ordering the bloodbath. According to Daniel Nassif, Executive Director, of the American Lebanese Institute, "Elie Hobeika and Pierre Rizk,who shared command of the Lebanese Forces (Phalangists) at the time of the Sabra and Shatilla massacre, have flourished in Syrian-controlled Lebanon. Hobeika has been one of the most trusted people in Lebanon by Damascus since at least 1985 and an influential minister in the Syrian-controlled Lebanese government since 1990. Rizk, who long collaborated with the PLO leadership, is currently reaping millions of dollars as a business front for Yasir Arafat and his wife Suha.

And the Jerusalem Post writes that the armed wing of Fatah on Thursday announced its decision to change its name from the Aksa Martyrs Brigades to the Brigades of Martyr Yasser Arafat.

And again, the Israelinsider writes of the ("Godfather of Terror Yasser Arafat," the Egyptian engineer who assumed the role of "freedom fighter" and invented the "Palestinian people" by introducing airplane hijacking and suicide bombing into the world and then deceived, extorted, and killed his way to international fame and fortune, bilking his society of billions of dollars, is, after a week of high tragicomic farce, finally and formally deemed dead.") The bizarre stories of Arafat's life and death appear to be almost endless.

Of course Arafat is not without supporters. But no amount of whitewashing can change the fact that he was the father of the suicide bomber and of modern terrorism. All this is not to say that Arafat didn't accomplish some good in his life. But the more one learns of Arafat and his life of hate and perversion, the less an informed, compassionate, and civil human being can find to praise about him. Except of course, there are the French!
